Finding links that take you to mobile websites that aren't friendly to mobile phones, can be frustrating and costly. We have found a few links that are nearly mobile friendly and so we provide links to those sites, because mobile friendly links are hard to find when you're already mobile!

Mobile links

The most important mobile friendly link is: Google. Google mobile made the effort to make their mobile search engine mobile friendly and we're surprised and impressed. Some other brand name business sites are not as mobile friendly.

Mobile Chaos validates at 90% mobile friendly.

Mastercard nearby mobile is 79% mobile friendly

WapSwap is only 30% mobileOK.

AOL mobile is only 36% mobileOK, not mobile friendly!

Web on your cell is 77% mobileOK.

Yahoo mobile is 92% mobileOK

Yelp Mobile is 94% mobileOK

TrioBits is only 16% mobileOK

Palm mobile portal is 31% mobileOK

MobileDuck is not even valid xhtml and only rates 59% mobileOK!

PdaMobileWeb is 38% mobileOK.

bing mobile is only 92% mobileOK.

Duke University library mobile isn't valid and is still 92% mobileOK.

Blackberry mobile is 93% mobileOK and is only html 4.01 valid!

The best example of a link (100's of KB) that's not mobile friendly is the yahoo mobile ad services page. It's not valid, it's huge (from all the graphics) and you can't get mobileOK to even check it, because of all the errors! When we included a link to http://mobile.yahoo.com/business/advertiser, mobileOK said our page failed validation!

After not finding any other 100% mobilOK sites, we gave up trying to find mobile friendly links! When we have the time and patience, we'll try again.

Perhaps these sites didn't know how to find a mobile web designer, because they don't seem to know what mobile friendly means.

Linking to sites that are not mobile friendly can create a poor user experience and you don't want your customers blaming your site for wasting their time! Always warn users if the link goes to a site that may not be mobile friendly. We note the file size beside the link, where the linked resource is not mobile friendly. You can decide if you wish to follow the link anyway.

Broken links on mobile sites are not friendly at all. We use the W3C link checker frequently, to ensure that all our links still work.

The only way to discover if a link is mobile friendly is to see how big the page is (less than 20KB total), when you press the link. When the download counter hits 40KB, press stop or back and simply ignore that link. Although finding friendly links is hard, keep searching! A list of mobile friendly websites from W3C, is available (from 2008). A mobileOK site on that list is mobiforge and it is friendly to mobiles.
